Zim: The Artist
Zimbabwe Reid
Zimbabwe Reid is an artist who works in a variety of media. With a conceptual approach, he uses references and ideas from reality, and integrates them into the process of a composition. He does this without escaping the intrigue of individuals who may never explore how and why. As a child Zim drew comic-book superheroes, basketball players, his favorite cartoons. Later he began to draw landscapes, still-life, portraits, and automobiles.
His Portrait artworks respond to directionalized light. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. By applying abstraction, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by the means of simply drawing the shadows. On black paper he inverts the approach, and draws the light instead; allowing shadows to shape within the negative space.
His works are a drawn reflection upon the art of art itself. He likes to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered fashion. He likes to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical, and believes in the idea of function following form in a work.
His works reference recognizable form. His medium includes, Pencil, Color Pencil, Oil Pastels, Chalk, Oil Paint, & Clay Sculpting. Zim also uses a variety of adobe software including; Flash, Illustrator, After Effects, & Photoshop to name a few. He is currently constructing a Graphic Novel, & Animated Cartoon.
